Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity in the Koerner Lab

Working DEI Statement:

The Koerner Biodiversity Lab is committed to fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity, supporting every member’s diverse background and heritage, and promoting fairness and compassion in the workplace. The Koerner lab does not discriminate based on race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, or mental or physical ability. We embrace, value, and seek a diversity of ideas and perspectives.

In particular, we are committed to:
  • Maintaining an environment free of discrimination and harassment
  • Creating an environment where individuals can bring their “full selves”
  • Developing a sense of belonging and community in the lab for all
  • Advocating for individuality and diverse perspectives
  • Promoting kindness and understanding in all aspects of work
  • Providing educational and professional opportunities based on each individual’s diverse background
  • Recognizing inequities and learning how to address them in our lab and discipline

These commitments require continued learning (and unlearning) and effort. As such our lab is undertaking the following initiatives:
Professional Training associated DEI:
  • Dedicated lab meetings - Twice a semester have lab meetings where we read papers about injustices and equalities paired with discussions to promote “difficult” conversations and ...
  • Participation in workshops and seminar
  • Mentor-mentee meetings - (Grad student -> undergrad and PI -> grad/undergrad); Individualized professional development plan
Inclusive practices are those that include an active, intentional, meaningful, and equitable engagement across the diversity of our NACE community. Recognizing our diversity while meaningfully engaging it facilitates greater awareness, knowledge, understanding of the complex ways individuals engage within systems and institutions. Building these skills and abilities among individual members will begin to address past injustices and lay a strong foundation for equitable success for our individuals and organizations, and, as a consequence, our nation and the global communities where we work.

Belonging refers to the perceived support, feeling of connectedness, and experience of community among peers and colleagues within the association. Belonging is a process of building a foundation through diversity, equity, and inclusive practices that cultivates the cornerstone of engagement in our community.
